About Theatre Cottage
Spread over 1.4 acres of land, fringed by an opaque green forest, and hosting the best of artistic and aesthetic expressions, Theatre Cottage in Birbhum district of West Bengal is a dream in progress.
Designed and conceptualised by poet, painter and theatre practitioner, resident of Dwaronda village Partha Gupta in 2007 and named thus by his mentor, the legendary Manipuri thespian Ratan Thiyam, Theatre Cottage brings together Gupta’s pet passion for theatre, the performing arts, indigenous forms and cultural interactions with a wider awareness for nature, environment and ecological sustainability.
Over the years, Theatre Cottage has hosted theatre festival and music festivals; folk and tribal festival performance arts; theatre and music workshops, folk and tribal painting workshops, exhibition and demonstration of traditional crafts and musical instruments. The place is also home to the Birbhum Blossom Theatre, a repertory theatre group helmed by Gupta.
An intimate amphitheatre made of mud; palm frond stage backdrop and wings, open air sitting, apart from that there are several performance spaces here. Organic farming and various ecological practices underline the deep engagement of the arts with the good earth at the dreamscape that is Theatre Cottage.
Our Story
Founded in 2007 by Partha Gupta, a multifaceted artist—poet, painter, and theatre aficionado—Theatre Cottage was named by the esteemed Manipuri theatre maestro, Ratan Thiyam. Gupta’s vision was to create a sanctuary where the arts flourish amidst the embrace of nature, fostering a profound connection between creativity and the environment.
